Hawa Mahal literally means Palace of Winds” or “Palace of the Breeze”. It’s probably unlinke any palace you’ve ever seen; the overall shape is similar honeycomb of the beehive with its 953 small windows called jharokhas that are decorated with intricate latticework. The palace is built with red and pink coloured sand stone like many other monuments in the city. To me the color looks nothing like pink, it’s more like a dull peachy-brown.

Hawa Mahal from the main road.

The view from Hawa Mahal (that’s Nahargarh fort in the background).

This is a slightly messy photo but I wanted to show you what the main road looks like from one of the higher jharokas. Don’t get me started on Jaipur traffic, it’s by far the craziest I’ve ever seen in India.
